How to add a Settlement as a Vassal. Getting to Clan Rank 3 is the first step. You will be able to take new settlement and castles as a vassal. You will need to then join the faction that controls the zone you want. As long as the ruling clan does not absolutely hate you, you should be able to join their kingdom.
One of their cities to the very north-west of their starting territory is sorta isolated on it's own bit of land, with the only way to reach it being a narrow, often bandit-infested valley. Might be a good place to start. battania. rare archer, no horse archer, weak cavalry, means easier to beat in battles. their highland also easier to defend
I stopped forming the kingdom. I found you can take over towns and castles without it. Find a spot you can take, wait for the right moment. seige the town and take it, when the enemy army comes pay for peace. rinse, repeat. I have like 5 major towns, and 7 castles. and since you are not a kingdom yet, they cant delcare war on you.

Late game is pretty boring. Im on my longest playthrough yet. ConsiderMyKingdom mod gives me 10 clans in my kingdom (all tier 5 or 6) Yet all I do is recruit units and upgrading them. The clans in my kingdom only raise armies around 500-700, even though I hand them free influence.

Decide which Imperial town you want. Join as a vassal to the closest non-Imperial faction to that town. Gain some influence with battles and missions. Wait til they're at war with the Imperial faction that holds the town you desire. Once at war, spend all your influence on building an army to take the town.
